According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is planning to release an updated 13-inch MacBook Air and a larger 15-inch MacBook Air between late spring and summer. However, the type of chips that these models will use remains a big question.
Gurman suggests that it is possible for the next 13-inch MacBook Air to feature the yet-to-be-announced M3 chip, which is expected to deliver better performance and will be produced based on TSMC’s latest 3nm process. The current 13-inch model uses the M2 chip, which is based on a 5nm process and was released in July 2022.
It is unclear whether the 15-inch MacBook Air will also be equipped with the M3 chip. Gurman notes that a 15-inch model with the M2 chip may still appeal to consumers, but it will soon become outdated as the M3 chip is on the horizon.
Ross Young, a display industry analyst with a good track record of Apple rumors, has reported that Apple’s supply chain has started production of display panels for a new 15.5-inch MacBook Air. This would be the largest MacBook Air model ever, as the notebook has only been offered in 13-inch and 11-inch sizes before.
While there is still some uncertainty regarding the chips that will be used in the new MacBook Air models, Gurman expects both 13-inch and 15-inch models to be released by summer. Additionally, he predicts that a new Mac Pro desktop tower with an M2 Ultra chip and the same design as the 2019 model will launch by summer, and an updated 24-inch iMac will be released in the second half of this year at the earliest.
